Kickstands Up is built for riders who'd rather be riding — not worrying about their data. This page explains what we collect, how we use it, and the choices you have.
What we collect
Kickstands Up stores the data that makes the app useful to you. Most of it lives right on your device: the routes you favorite, the rides you save, custom rides you build with your own waypoints, and your Trip Log entries — ratings, mileage, weather snapshots, and any notes you add after a ride. Some data lives on our servers so it can work across devices and riders: your account profile (managed through our sign-in provider, Clerk), your Road Crew connections and invites, ride shares you send to other riders, and any live group ride sessions you join. When you start a Live Tracking session, the app accesses your device location so it can show your position on the shared map for that session.
How location is used
Your location is only accessed and shared while a Live Tracking session is active, and only with the crew members who opt into that same session. Starting a session is always an explicit action you take — the app never begins sharing on its own. As soon as the session ends, or you leave it, location sharing stops automatically. We never track your location in the background, we never build a history of where you ride from tracking data, and we never sell location data to anyone. Outside of Live Tracking, location is used on-device only — for example, to sort nearby rides or drop a starting pin on the map.
Where your data lives
Favorites, saved rides, custom rides, and your Trip Log are stored locally on your device — deleting the app deletes them. Account data, Road Crew relationships, ride shares, and promo redemptions are stored on our API server so they survive reinstalls and work between riders. Sign-in is handled by Clerk, a dedicated authentication service; we never see or store your password.
Subscriptions
Kickstands Up's paid plans — Cruiser and Road Dog — are billed entirely through your app store (Apple App Store or Google Play), whether you choose a monthly plan, an annual plan, or a Season Pass. We use RevenueCat solely to verify whether your plan is active so the app can unlock its features — RevenueCat receives an anonymous app user identifier and purchase receipts from the store, nothing more. Your name, card number, and billing address are processed by Apple or Google, never by us, and we cannot see them.
Third-party services
To plan and display rides, the app calls a small set of public, keyless services: OpenStreetMap Nominatim for turning a ZIP code or city into map coordinates, OSRM and Valhalla for calculating scenic driving routes and ride times, and public weather and sunset APIs for ride-day forecasts. These requests contain only the coordinates or place names needed to answer them — no account identifiers, no advertising IDs, and no device fingerprints.
Data we don't collect
There is no ad tracking in Kickstands Up — no advertising SDKs, no cross-app tracking identifiers, and no analytics brokers. We do not sell or rent your data to anyone. We do not collect your location in the background, we do not read your contacts, and we do not scan your photos.
Data retention
On-device data (favorites, saved and custom rides, Trip Log) stays until you delete it or remove the app. Server-side account data — your profile, Road Crew connections, and ride shares — is kept while your account is active and removed when your account is deleted. Live Tracking positions are ephemeral: they exist to power the session map and are not kept as a ride history.
Children's privacy
Kickstands Up is built for licensed motorcyclists and is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has created an account, contact us at the email below and we will remove it.
Your choices
You can delete favorites, saved rides, custom rides, and Trip Log entries from within the app at any time — those live on your device, so removing them there removes them, period. You can decline or leave any Live Tracking session, and you can remove Road Crew connections whenever you like. To delete your account and the data our servers hold about you, use “Delete account” in the app's Settings, or email us at the address below — see our Account Deletion page for exactly what gets removed.
Changes to this policy
If we change how the app handles your data, we will update this page and adjust the date at the top. Meaningful changes — anything that affects location sharing or what our servers store — will also be called out in the app so you are not surprised.
